Balearic Islands legalizes thousands of accommodations. “To the detriment of residents”
The Balearic government's decision has also been met with criticism from local unions, who fear it will deepen social tensions. Tourism businesses have also expressed concerns, despite benefiting from the growth of tourism. They stress that it is unwise to pit short-term economic benefits against long-term social stability.
Unlike other Spanish regions, such as Madrid, Malaga or Barcelona, the Balearic government has not pursued a policy of expanding the offer of high-class hotels. Over the past three years, the influx of international luxury hotel brands has been negligible – in contrast to other regions, which focus on more affluent tourists.
The decree legalizing tourist accommodation is, according to many observers, a breakthrough that could have long-term effects on the social structure and economic development of the Balearic Islands.
